Ali Aslan Gümüsay is a Doctoral Scholar at Saïd Business School and a Lecturer at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. He is a member of Christ Church, Oxford, the Novak Druce Centre for Professional Services Firms, the Think Tank 30 of the Club of Rome, Head of the Advisory Board of the Social Incubator Zahnräder Network and Non-Executive Director in various companies. Ali works as an academic, entrepreneur, speaker and consultant.

Ali’s research and teaching interests include: organisation, management and institutional theory, strategic management, innovation, entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship, leadership and business ethics, Islamic Finance as well as the interconnection of religion and business.

Prior to his DPhil, Ali was a strategy consultant with the Boston Consulting Group. He gained an MSc in Management Research, graduating with Distinction from Saïd Business School and Green Templeton College, Oxford, a Diplôme in Social Sciences from Sciences Po Paris and a First Class Honours for his BSc in Economics, Politics and International Studies at Warwick University. He has a certificate in Islamic Finance Executive Education from Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, was an Affiliate at the Institute for Science, Innovation & Society, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford and read Islamic Studies at Magdalen College and the Oriental Studies Department of the University of Oxford.

Research
At the heart of Ali’s research are issues around people, organisations and society. Ali’s thesis employs an institutional perspective to explore the intersection of religion and organisations. He has published an article on Entrepreneurship from an Islamic Perspective in 2014 in the Journal of Business Ethics and on Boundaries and Knowledge in a Sufi Dhikr Circle in 2012 in the Journal of Management Development.

In a different research stream Ali analyses the role of peer interaction of experienced academic entrepreneurs and nascent academic entrepreneurs. He has a working paper on academic entrepreneurship together with Dr Thomas Bohné which he has presented at AOM and EGOS.

Teaching
At Oxford, Ali is Lecturer at Magdalen College. He has worked as a Tutor in Strategy, a Teaching Assistant on various Executive Education Programmes such as the Scenarios, Management Acceleration and the Entrepreneurial University Leadership Programmes as well as the Developing Effective Managers MBA and the General Management undergraduate course. He has also helped with undergraduate interviews for Merton College, admissions at Christ Church and run tutorials at Brasenose College and at St. Catherine’s College.

Ali has lectured and spoken inter alia at the World Islamic Economic Forum, EGOS, AOM, BAM, University of Münster, World Muslim Leadership Forum, Istanbul University, Impact Initiatives for Change, Eurasia Consortium, the University of Osnabrück, Durham University Islamic Finance Summer School and the University of Oxford.

Engagement
Ali is the Head of the Advisory Board of the social incubator Zahnräder Network. He co-founded Zahnräder in 2010 and was its Chairman until 2013. Zahnräder encourages and enables social entrepreneurship in Germany and has been supported, for example, by the British Council, Youth for Europe and Ashoka Changemakers and won the Social Entrepreneurship Academy Public Choice Award in 2012.

Ali is a member of the Think Tank 30 of the Club of Rome and co-edited a book in German called 7 Virtues Reloaded. Recently, he was selected as one of 99 foreign policy leaders under the age of 33 by Diplomatic Courier. He is Non-Executive Director in various ventures in education, finance and technology. He mentored the 2012 regional winner of the Saïd Global Entrepreneurship Challenge.In 2014 he was also a jury member for the social entrepreneurship awards „Go for Social!“ and the „Hult Prize“ in Oxford. Ali and two colleagues also won the Exist-scholarship from the German Federal Ministry of Economics & Technology worth 100,000 Euros. They subsequently turned it down due to other commitments.
